My Approach
I believe that children have within them what they need to heal and that I can help support them in this process with creative approaches. I integrate movement and talk into the work I do with individuals primarily through play, sand tray, and brainspotting therapies.

I also believe this healing can happen most effectively within community. I think society typically unfairly expects families to support children and adolescents without communal support. This is why I integrate families into therapy with children through coaching, family sessions, and/or consultation.
For children under 12, I require that parents engage in family therapy or parent coaching when their child is in individual therapy. This typically looks like me meeting with parents 1:1 (in-person or telehealth) after I meet with a child. When it is therapeutically appropriate, I will later bring parents into the therapy as part of our work. I am happy to work with families to find a way to make this work logistically and I believe that it is essential to a child's healing that families are involved.

What is play therapy?
A child-led approach that encourages children to process through movement and imagination. Children communicate their thoughts, feelings, and needs through interactive play with a trained therapist. I work to help the child process, release, and ultimately integrate difficult feelings into their lives. I primarily use Synergetic Play Therapy, which prioritizes supporting a child in moving towards challenging emotions so the child can be their most authentic self.

During the sessions, I allow the child to lead and we work on increasing their skills to regulate through difficult emotions. At the end of sessions, I meet with the child’s parents to discuss the therapeutic process, updates on goals, and how they can support their child outside of sessions. When it's a right fit, I will bring parents into the play room to work with their child as well.

What is sand tray therapy?
A client- centered approach that allows individuals to use the creative parts of their brain to understand and process different emotions. Sand trays often bring to light issues that an individual might be struggling with but is having trouble putting into words. Individuals can talk as little or as much as they'd like.

During sessions, I allow the individual to choose miniatures and create their own world in the tray. I talk to process the trays when it is appropriate for the individual's age. I integrate information from trays into conversations with parents after sessions.

What is brainspotting therapy?
A mindful approach to increasing an individual's connection with their body so they can process pain their body is still holding. During sessions, I utilize calming music and a focused 'spot' to help clients connect to their body while focusing on challenging thoughts, emotions, or behaviors. I help the individual notice and then we talk through the process after.

This approach can be especially supportive for adolescents if they feel overwhelmed when talking about something that is bothering them. Individuals can choose to talk as much or as little as they'd like during sessions. It also allows us to use positive associations so that individuals can use things like calming music or deep breathing when they are not in session and feeling overwhelmed. I integrate learnings from these sessions into conversations with parents at our check ins.

What is family therapy?
A wholistic approach to understanding how individuals within a family work together as one and therefore influence one another. Family therapy helps us understand one another better and also create more sustainable change for children and adolescents by bringing to light dynamics that might be impacting keeping families stuck.

During sessions, I work with parents to better understand their family history, patterns of emotions, and ways that the family is currently functioning. Then we work together to create realistic goals, practice self-reflection, and make any needed shifts in emotional styles.
